Many people think that LinkedIn is only good for finding a job … or for researching the people who are about to interview you. But it is a whole lot more than this.
Social Media folks will understand the power of a network, but spend a surprisingly small amount of time tending to professional online networks such as LinkedIn. But while Facebook is obviously more “social”, there are some huge benefits to creatively using LinkedIn. Take a look at this excellent explanation of LinkedIn from Lee LeFever from CommonCraft.com, then think about how YOU use LinkedIn. How can you improve? Where is a gap? Oh, and what are your secrets. I have been a member of LinkedIn for two years and while I admit it’s great for keeping in touch with business contacts, I’ll admit I haven’t used it much on the job hunt side of things.
With the whole doom and gloom of the economy at the moment I’ve started keeping an eye on what exactly is out there and after doing some desktop research came across http://www.staffsearcher.com.au
The site taps into the still booming social networking craze and people who sign up refer people in their network for jobs that are going on the site – if their friend get the job, they get a referral fee. I keep reading that the best job candidates are not actively looking for jobs, but experience shows many will switch roles when presented with the right opportunity.
I can see how this work from all three points of the triangle: your friend gets a (possibly better) job; you get a bit of cashola and the company hiring taps into a network of hundreds of thousands of candidates with ‘no risk’ (they only pay the finder’s fee should if they find someone suitable for the role)
Will be keeping an eye on this one….
